JTF foils kidnap attempt on another relative of President Jonathan in Bayelsa

Kidnapping is a major security threat in Nigeria, especially in its south.

The victim said her mother and Mr. Jonathan’s are first cousins.

Less than 24 hours after the police announced that it had rescued a kidnapped uncle of President Goodluck Jonathan, another relative of the president was saved from kidnappers on Thursday, a security agency has said.

The Joint Task Force, JTF, in the Niger Delta on Thursday said it foiled a kidnap incident in Ogbia Local Government Area in Bayelsa.

Onyema Nwachukwu, the Media Coordinator of the JTF, who presented the fortunate victim, Patience Agbani, to journalists on Thursday, attributed the feat to the timely information received from the victim.

Mr. Nwachukwu, a Colonel, urged members of the public in distress to contact the headquarters of the JTF on 0803 220 2684 for prompt intervention.

Narrating her ordeal, Ms. Agbani said that the six-person kidnap gang trailed her on Wednesday night and later chased her until she ran into an uncompleted building from where she placed a distress call to JTF.

According to her, the timely response of the JTF troops compelled the kidnappers who were on her trail to retreat.

“When I closed from my shop at after 9 p.m., on Wednesday night as I crossed the road I noticed that the boys were following me in a very suspicious way and suddenly they started pursing me.

“I ran into an uncompleted building and called the JTF, who arrived almost immediately and the kidnappers who were looking for me ran away on seeing the soldiers. That was how they rescued me,” she said.

Ms. Agbani, who said that her mother and President Jonathan’s mother are first cousins, expressed
appreciation to the security agencies for their swift intervention and rescue.

Ogbia council, where the attempt to kidnap Ms. Agbani was executed, is also the council where Nengite Nitabai, President Jonathan’s 70-year-old uncle, was kidnapped.

The Bayelsa Police announced on Thursday that it had freed Mr. Nitabai, who was abducted on February 23.
