The conduct of some Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC officials, who smashed the window glass of a car and tried to apply its handbrake while in motion, has incurred public ire.
The officials had resorted to force in an attempt to arrest the driver of the car for allegedly breaking a traffic rule along Wuse Road, Abuja, on Wednesday.
This is just as the corps said the overbearing officials had been identified and were currently under investigations.
PUNCH Metro learnt that the driver, whose name had yet to be ascertained and his friend, one Benjamin Mogazi, were on the way to their office around 7am.
The driver was said to have been flagged down by a team of FRSC officials, but refused to park by the roadside, which made a female official among the team to enter into the car.
A one minute and 16 seconds video posted by Mogazi on Facebook, which had gone viral, showed the female official struggling from the back seat to apply the handbrake in a desperate attempt to bring the vehicle to a halt.
But Mogazi, who sat in the front, and the driver resisted her, resulting in a commotion as the car moved on. The conversation below ensued among the trio:
Mogazi: You call yourself a safety officer; (can) you see what you are doing? A safety officer, a road safety officer; look at what you are doing? You want to kill…
Female official: If you see your wife on the road…
Mogazi: Which wife? You see what you are doing. Is this right?
Female official: Yes!
Driver: Don’t worry; don’t worry. I will take this thing to the authorities. Video her name. Make sure you get her name. You have spoilt my vehicle.
Mogazi: (to the official) Do you see what you have done?
Driver: Don’t worry, I get the time. You see what you are doing to my vehicle. Don’t fight her.
Mogazi: You call yourself a safety officer; you are a disgrace.
Female official: What of you? Are you not a disgrace?
Mogazi: I am not. You want to break my hand. You applied the handbrake. The vehicle is moving and you put it on handbrake.
Driver: (as other officials appeared in a van) Video them; video them very well. Good.
One of the officials rushed down from the van nd angrily smashed the window glass of the car.
“You are stupid. You are very stupid,” he yelled.
Although Benjamin had yet to reply to a message sent to him by our correspondent, enquiring for more details, he wrote on his Facebook wall that the officials declined to tell them their offence.
He wrote, “Out of nowhere, the road safety officers appeared and asked us to park. It was 7.20am. We asked what our offence was, but no response from them and we were moving slowly. Next thing, an officer inside the car tried to strangle the driver with the seat belt. That was before I started the recording. The driver has his complete document and licence.”
While many Nigerians criticised the officials, saying their action was unprofessional and could cause an accident, others blamed the driver for not submitting himself to security officials.
