The death toll from a huge gas station explosion and flooding in Ghana’s capital Accra has killed at least 150 people who were sheltering from torrential rain, Ghana’s president John Dramani Mahama said Thursday night. He described the loss of life as “catastrophic and almost unprecedented”, as he toured the scene of the disaster.

“A lot of people have lost their lives and I am lost for words,” he said.

President Mahama declared three days of national mourning for the victims and says government would allocate about $12 million for relief operations and to repair damaged infrastructure.
