Real Madrid have sacked Rafa Benitez after holding a meeting over his future, according to multiple reports in Spain.

The 55-year-old Spanish coach leaves Real Madrid in third place in La Liga, four points off city rivals Atletico at the top and two behind Barcelona, who have a game in hand.

In his last match, a 2-2 draw at Valencia, Benitez appeared to anger goalscorer Karim Benzema when substituting him.

Real won 11 of their 18 league games under Benitez, losing three.

According to Champions Leagues on its Twitter handle, Zinedine Zidane who is 43-year-old has been named as the new Real Madrid coach, promising he “will put all of his heart into it”.
